Industries We Serve

Retail and Financial Services Construction

A branch or a storefront is judged on opening day by people who have never read a drawing. The finishes are the product, the schedule is tied to a lease, and the space next door is usually still trading.

Credit union and bank branch work

Financial branches carry requirements a general retail upfit does not. Teller lines, cash handling and after-hours areas have security and access-control implications that touch structure, low voltage and door hardware at once. Branch brand standards are usually a national specification the contractor has to build to exactly rather than approximately. And the vendors who install the security and technology package arrive on a schedule that is not the general contractor's to set, which makes coordination the whole job.

Hayco has delivered two locations for Allegacy Federal Credit Union, a Triad-based institution serving North Carolina since 1967. The Winston-Salem project was an interior renovation at 6,100 square feet. The Mocksville project was an interior upfit of a 2,000 square foot space in the Mocksville Financial Center for the credit union's newest location.

Opening on the date the lease says

Retail schedules are rarely negotiable, because the date is attached to rent, staffing and in many cases an announced opening. That changes how the work is planned. Long-lead finishes and millwork are ordered before they feel urgent, inspections are booked against the certificate of occupancy rather than the punch list, and the sequence assumes at least one late change from the owner because there almost always is one.

Working in and around trading neighbors

Most of this work happens inside centers and buildings that stay open. Deliveries and demolition debris move through shared service corridors on other tenants' schedules. Noise gets restricted to hours that will not drive customers out of the shop next door. And the storefront has to look finished from the outside well before it is finished on the inside.

The Capital Animal Hospital project in Columbia, South Carolina is a good illustration of the mix: a new surgery suite plus roughly 2,500 square feet of interior renovation inside an operating veterinary hospital, with a revamped storefront entrance, an awning and an accessible walkway for patient discharges, delivered without closing the practice.

Allegacy selected Hayco twice in eighteen months, for two very different branch sizes. Thirsty Souls sits between retail and mixed use: residential units above a working brewery. It is here because the storefront and occupied-neighbor constraints are identical to a shopping center upfit.

How retail and financial projects are usually delivered

01

Interior upfit

is the standard structure, because the shell already exists and the scope is everything inside the lease line.

02

General construction to a brand standard

suits multi-location owners whose branch or store specification is already fixed nationally.

03

Design-build

fits a freestanding building or a substantial exterior change, where the site and the envelope are in play.

Common questions

Have you built credit union or bank branches?

Yes. Hayco has delivered two locations for Allegacy Federal Credit Union in North Carolina, at 6,100 and 2,000 square feet.

Can you work in a center that stays open?

Yes. Every project above was delivered in or adjacent to occupied space, including a veterinary hospital that kept operating and a brewery that kept trading underneath the work.

Can you hold an opening date tied to a lease?

That is the planning assumption. Long-lead finishes and millwork are procured early and inspections are sequenced against the certificate of occupancy rather than the punch list.
