Hangar door selection drives more of the design than anything else on the project. A hydraulic one-piece door, a bi-fold and a sliding door each impose a different header condition, a different clear opening, a different structural load path and a different maintenance obligation on the owner. That decision has to be made early, because the frame is engineered around it.
The Surry County Aircraft Hangar in Mount Airy was built with a hydraulic hangar door. It is the single element on that building most visible to whoever uses it every week.
A hangar floor takes point loads from landing gear and jacks, and it takes fuel, hydraulic fluid and solvents. Epoxy flooring is the usual answer because it resists all of that and cleans up, but it only performs if the slab underneath was prepared for it.
Heating a hangar is its own problem. The volume is enormous, the door opens regularly, and heating the air is largely wasted. Infrared heating warms surfaces and people rather than air, which is why it appears in hangars far more often than in warehouses of the same size. The Surry County building uses infrared heaters, epoxy flooring, and includes a 600 square foot office and lounge area built into the envelope.
Airport work adds a layer most commercial projects never see. The site sits inside an operating airfield, which means construction access, vehicle movement and any crane or lift activity have to be coordinated with airport operations rather than simply scheduled. Approvals typically run through an airport authority or a county body in addition to the local building department, and those bodies meet on their own calendar.
